Artist's Description

1906 San Francisco earthquake. Statue of the Swiss-US geologist and naturalist Louis Agassiz (1807-1873), embedded in a paved floor at Stanford University after being thrown from its niche (above the arches) by the large earthquake of 18 April 1906. The earthquake occurred on the San Andreas fault, with its epicentre a few kilometres to the north of Stanford University, just off the coast of the city of San Francisco, California, USA. The earthquake was one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the USA. This photograph, by John Casper Branner and now in the Karl V. Steinbrugge Collection, was originally published in the report by the State Earthquake Investigation Commission (1908-10).
